Gloucester Road Books announces packed autumn events programme
As booksellers Tom Robinson and Joe Melia have pointed out, from morning to night, there’s a lot going on at Gloucester Road Books.
Local readers are always invited to peruse their latest themed book lists, or to pop in and ask for a personal recommendation.
And for those intrigued to delve even deeper, their many and varied literary events are a great place to start.

On September 13, celebrated writer, facilitator, performance poet and former Bristol City Poet Vanessa Kisuule will be marking the release of her debut non-fiction book, Neverland: The Pleasures and Perils of Fandom, at a special event taking place at The Station.
As well as performing, Kisuule will be talking to bestselling author Max Porter (Grief is The Thing With Feathers; Lanny; Shy); there will also be music, and perhaps – it is rumoured – a mini quiz.

Vanessa Kisuule has over 10 poetry slam titles to her name
Back at the shop, Bruce Omar Yates will be in conversation with author and screenwriter Nikesh Shukla on 17th about his debut novel, The Muslim Cowboy, hailed by its publishers Dead Ink Books as “an extraordinary and mesmerising literary debut about the search for identity” set in the aftermath of the Iraq war.
Later that week, on 19th, University of Bristol lecturer Dr Noreen Masud (A Flat Place) will be hosting a discussion and Q&A with Joanna Nadin about The Future of the Self – a book that tries to interrogate our understanding of ourselves in an increasingly globalised and technologically advanced society.
In October comes a continuation in the culinary event series that Gloucester Road Books hosts at its neighbours, Boston Tea Party. On 3rd, chef, food writer and broadcaster Romy Gill will be joined by Nikesh Shukla to discuss her new cookbook, Romy Gill’s India: Recipes from Home.
A few days later, on 7th, Palestinian author Ibtisam Azem will be at the bookshop, talking to Dr Noreen Masud about her acclaimed novel, The Book of Disappearance (translated by Sinan Antoon).
On 14th, for short story fans, award-winning writer Jan Carson will be giving an interview and answering questions about Quickly, While They Still Have Horses, a collection described by fellow author Donal Ryan as “pure magic, funny, sharp, heartbreaking, the short form at its absolute best”.

Jan Carsson is the author of books including The Raptures, The Fire Starters, and Quickly, While They Still Have Horses
November’s highlights include an interview, Q&A and book signing on 6th with the acclaimed Jonathan Coe (The Rotter’s Club; Middle England; What a Carve Up!), who will present his 15th novel, The Proof of My Innocence at Bristol Central Library’s historic Reading Room.
Coe will be in conversation with Johanna Thomas-Corr, chief literary critic of The Times and Sunday Times.
On 14th, André Marmot will be talking about his jazz-music-fuelled book, Unapologetic Expression, together with fellow musician and author, Dave Randall. And the award-winning writer Ashani Lewis, will be joined on 21st by Constantine Blintzios to introduce her new short story collection, Everest.
