Help get a literary ‘classic’ back in print

By Joanna Papageorgiou  Saturday Jul 18, 2015

Reclusive artist Stanley Donwood who has been called the sixth member of Radiohead and has been the official artist of Glastonbury for the last couple of years, is now quite specifically and explicitly uninterested in whether his pulp fiction book, written over a month in 2002, will be republished.

Catacombs of Terror! was originally published as a very limited edition and was printed on hemp and typeset very small to save paper because hemp is really expensive. 13 years later and a fundraiser is in place to get the book reprinted and redesigned. Not on hemp.

Keep our city's journalism independent.

Catacombs of Terror! is a crime thriller set in the  ancient city of Bath in which private investigator Martin Valpolicella uncovers a sinister plot set in catacombs far beneath the city. It’s a story of guns, drugs and flesh-eating pigs. It has been desribed as a ‘classic’ and Donwood’s ‘masterpiece’.

The money raised from this appeal will pay for the cover illustration by Jacknife of Bristol, typesetting, the purchase of maps from Ambrose Blimfield for the purpose of illustrating the story and the printing of 2,000 books of 240 or so pages. This first edition will be limited to 2,000 copies with a total cost of £5500.

Donwood has also published two volumes of short stories with Bristol’s Tangent Books and one with Faber & Faber.

With such testimonials as: “At no point did I think ‘I can’t be bothered to read this'” by the author’s father, and “I have read half of it,” by 3D from Massive Attack it would be a shame to let the Catacombs Of Terror go unknown to new generations.

For £5 you can pre-purchase an ebook and with £10, a printed physical copy.
