Just About Books: a new series of conversations with authors
The founder of one of Bristol’s most pioneering tech companies is the first guest speaker in a new series of conversations with authors.
Nigel Toon (pictured above) is the co-founder and chief executive of silicon chip designer Graphcore, whose global headquarters are on Wine Street overlooking Castle Park.
He will be discussing his new book, How AI Thinks, a deep dive into a future that will be increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence, on February 20 at Design West.
is needed now More than ever
It is the first of a series of Just About Books talks, giving audiences the chance to hear and then quiz authors about their new books.
The Just About Books talks have been organised by former Sunday Times journalist Andrew Lynch, who lives in Hotwells.
Lynch said: “I was worried that once Bristol Ideas shuts up shop there might be fewer opportunities to see and hear authors in the city, which would be an immense shame.
“I have a few contacts in publishing, business and politics that I can put to use. And Design West has a great venue. So I thought I would see if it works.”

At the first event, Toon, who has sat on the Prime Minister’s Business Council, will be introduced by Bristol AI expert Sue Turner.
The next event at Design West on March 26 will see Paul Lindley, the philanthropist and entrepreneur who founded organic baby food brand Ella’s Kitchen, discussing his recently published book, Raising the Nation: How to Build a Better Future for Our Children.
Having served as the mayor of London’s obesity tsar, Lindley is now a campaigner for children’s welfare.
He will be introduced by professor Evelyn Welch, vice-chancellor of the University of Bristol, where Lindley studied.
