Sayeeda Warsi coming to Bristol
Sayeeda Warsi will deliver the University of Bristol’s Policy & Politics Lecture 2019 on Wednesday, on topics that couldn’t be more timely and relevant.
The UK’s first Muslim cabinet minister, now a baroness, will speak about Islamophobia, terrorism, surveillance, social justice, religious freedom, integration, the meaning of ‘British values’, and how Muslims are the latest in a long line of groups to be labelled ‘the enemy within’.
Much of this formed the basis for her 2017 book, The Enemy Within: a Tale of Muslim Britain in which she looked at the ‘othering’ of Muslims from her perspective as the child of Pakistani immigrants who went on to become a minister in a government whose policies were seen by many as anti-Muslim.
is needed now More than ever
The book received widespread acclaim with Helena Kennedy QC calling it “a vital book at a critical time”, Leila Aboulela declared it “forthright and intelligent” in the Guardian, and Andrew Marr thought it “eloquent, calm and clever”.
After the lecture, which is a joint event in association with Bristol Festival of Ideas, Baroness Warsi will be signing copies of the book.
Sayeeda Warsi will be appearing at the Wills Memorial Building on Wednesday, March 20 at 6pm. The event is free. For more information and to book tickets, visit www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/baroness-sayeeda-warsi-lecture-on-muslim-britain-tickets-54972464120
