By Joe Melia  Thursday Feb 20, 2020

Storysmith Books has received a significant nod of approval from the book industry’s leading publication, The Bookseller. The North Street shop, which has only been open for just over a year, has been shortlisted for the magazine’s prestigious Independent Bookshop of the Year award.

Storysmith has been selected for the regional round of the accolade alongside seven other South West bookshops. If Storysmith wins the regional award, the shop will then go on to be considered for the national prize, the winner of which will be announced at the British Book Awards on May 18.

The Bedminster shop opened in October 2018 under the stewardship of Emily and Dan Ross, the former having worked in children’s publishing for a decade.

As well as stocking a range of fiction and non-fiction titles, Storysmith host a lively events programme for children and adults, run book groups and workshops, collaborate with schools, and offer a carefully curated subscription service.

Locally sourced coffee from Triple Co Roast and cakes from Mark’s Bread are also part of the Storysmith experience, as is shop dog, Roy.

Reacting to the shortlist selection, Dan Ross said: “We’re honoured to make the regional shortlist alongside so many brilliant, resilient and inventive indie booksellers across the country. It’s a heartening recognition of the work we’ve put into the shop since we opened in 2018, but also a reflection of the health of the high street around us on North Street.

“Our fellow business owners make it a vibrant and evolving place for the community to use every day, and we’re so glad that our shop and bookselling in general is a part of that ongoing story.

“In the short term, the shortlisting will mean a lot of preparation for the next stage of the British Book Awards process as we’ll be required to submit all sorts of supporting documentation, but more generally we hope it’s a sign that Bristol is an incredible city of books and stories, and that those books and stories are a part of everyday life more than ever.”

Storysmith Books is at 49, North Street, in Bedminster. For further information, visit https://storysmithbooks.com.
