Review: Hospitality Bristol, Motion
Hospital Records’ events arm Hospitality returned to Motion on Saturday, October 19, spread out over three rooms and offering its biggest line up yet. In all its years evolving, I have to say that the promoter really showed off how to use this valuable venue: top lighting and laser shows in the main room and Marble Factory highlighted the venue’s industrial contours, complementing the most forward-thinking of music.
An early highlight of the night was first in the themed ‘Royal Rumble’ line up of rare B2B2B sets. Liquid gods Lenzman, LSB and FD performed to a quickly filling Marble Factory. Their signature soulful, deep, spacey and sometimes dubby sounds took us on a meandering journey, featuring what could be a new Lenzman & Tyler Daley vocal hit and some of LSB’s soon-to-be-released album with DRS, The Blue Room. They warmed up the crowd perfectly for next trio, Kings of The Rollers, taking us instantly into lairier DnB sounds whipping up the crowd into full party mode, MC Inja adding hype and interaction throughout.

With the venue now full, we headed over to the main room for head honcho Tony Colman in his London Elektricity guise. I caught him playing his worldly, musical sounds and possibly was some of their new material from a forthcoming album Building Better Worlds. It was warm and uplifting, leading the way for Hospital Records’ prized possession, High Contrast. Writer of many an anthem and equally able to put on a show, his set pulled no punches by starting out harder than expected with some material reminiscent of classical Metalheadz, through to more colourful and exotic shades.
The stage is set and the die-hard fans are ready.
I squeezed through the crowd to check out liquid DnB label Spearhead hosting The Tunnel. Label owner BCee took us through their deeper liquid soul-scapes, the crowd clearly enjoying what was to be heard there. However, I always find the system in here a bit too quiet to really appreciate it fully.
The lure of a B2B2B from legends and Bristol residents Randall, SPY with Doc Scott brought me back to the Marble Factory. This promised to be “one for the headz” and boy they didn’t disappoint. Tough, razor-edged soundscapes ripped the crowd to shreds, preparing nicely for final hard sets from scene golden boy Benny L & Audio Porn boss Shimon with their grizzly modern take on the roller sound that has brought so much success. Finishing off the main room Bristol’s TC brought down the house with his unique, boisterous sound.
As ever, Motions Main Room was big on light shows, lasers and unstoppable energy.
Hospitality throw events all over the world, the full spectrum of sounds draws all kinds of DnB fans and there is no sign of them stopping soon. Don’t sleep on the next event.
