Review: Intrigue feat. Fabio, Asylum Nightclub
Long-standing Bristol DnB night Intrigue has decided to go back to their roots with an intimate Thursday night side project at Asylum on St Stephens St. Their focus of the night? To play more ‘musical’ DnB and this brick-arched venue is a perfect place to capture the vibe with its low ceilings and tucked-away corners.
Kicking off, competition winner Pontiff warmed us up with a smooth set showing us the attention to details that gained him a slot. De La Haye took it up another level with a mixed set of old and new perfectly sat beside each other, the crowd clearly appreciating some old classics such as Midnight by MIST, and Supergrass by Carlito and Addiction.

Next up the head honcho, Ben Soundscape. He has been progressing his production over the last few years with a succession of releases on notable labels. The first track was a big tease for what’s to come from him and Collette Warren: a sweet piano hook with even sweeter vocals from one of the best female vocalists in DnB. It perfectly captures the Intrigue vibe but the title isn’t yet known – so keep an ear out for it as it will no doubt make waves.
Another mixed set followed with journeys into some darker territory to keep the crowd on their toes. Showing his connections, Ben dropped a yet unreleased Pola & Bryson remix of the DJ Marky track One Exception to the crowd’s delight, hands in the air time!
The main attraction, Fabio, was on last – a figure widely regarded as one of the godfathers of DnB alongside best friend Grooverider. We were in the company of a true legend here and he didn’t disappoint. Tune after tune of unreleased dubs followed, showcasing the future of the deeper side of DnB, a few current soulful anthems dropped in for reference in the journey such as Alice Perez’s groovy SWRV.
This first night really worked. Yet again Bristol’s world-renowned credentials for this genre are clear for all to see. Hats off to Intrigue – you’re doing us proud.
