Bristol Comedy Garden returns

By Lowie Trevena  Friday Mar 19, 2021

Bristol Comedy Garden has announced its return and has revealed it will move to a brand-new location.

Taking place on the Downs for the first time, the four-day event will see dozens of comedy stars take to the stage.

Already billed to perform at this year’s event, which takes place from June 2-6, include Simon Amstell, Sara Pascoe, Tom Allen, Dara O’Briain, Nish Kumar and Josh Widdicombe.

Traditionally held in a big top on Queen Square, 2021’s event has moved to the Downs to allow for social distancing. Performances will take place on an open-air stage with inbuilt screens.

In keeping with the Covid-19 guidelines, tickets will be sold in groups of two or four with audiences seated on chairs in socially distanced plots in an al-fresco arena.

There will also be multiple entry points, one-way walkways, enhanced hygiene facilities and staff will wear PPE.

The Garden will not have the usual bars, street food stalls and intervals either. Instead, audience members can pre-select drinks and snacks, which will be delivered to their seats.

Other comedians on the 2021 lineup include Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Bridget Christie, Tom Allen and festival favourites Ed Gamble, John Robins and David O’Doherty.

Breakthrough talents Sophie Duker, Sarah Keyworth, Ray Badran, Maisie Adam, Rachel Parris and Jamali Maddix will also take to the stage.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing the Comedy Garden back. It was heartbreaking to have to cancel last year’s event and we consider ourselves incredibly lucky to have been able to reimagine the event to suit these challenging times,” say organisers Will Briggs and Cass Randolph.

“We’ve got an unbelievable line-up, even by our standards, and can’t wait to get these acts in front of our wonderful Bristol audiences.

“We’re working closely with the local council and our suppliers to make sure we deliver an event that is safe and enjoyable for everyone – and above all very funny!”
