Chuckle Busters hosts a raft of Edinburgh preview double bills in July

By Sarski Anderson  Tuesday Jul 2, 2024

Since 2012, local comedy promoters Chuckle Busters have been bringing some of the brightest standup talent in the country to Bristol, both for their own regular lineup nights and tour shows.

But comedy fans are particularly well served in the early summer months, when they have a chance to see their favourite standups warming up their shows before the Edinburgh Fringe festival in August.

Having already hosted Jordan Brookes, Rob Auton, Sophie Duker and Andy Zaltzman in June, Chuckle Busters are presenting a further six Edinburgh preview double bills and one ‘works-in-progress’ double bill at The Wardrobe Theatre through July.

Celya Ab

From the wry observations of French comic Celya Ab to the hi-tech absurdity of the inimitable Mat Ewins; the deadpan, alt-musical delivery of Huge Davies to the sheer force of personality and masterful standup of Sara Barron, there is something to appeal to every comedy fan.

And, for the particularly hardy amongst them, on July 21, there is a chance to watch four previews in one day.

Mat Ewins

Other highlights include Olga Koch, Ivo Graham, Larry Dean and Brennan Reece, and a work-in-progress double bill from Lou Sanders and Lucy Pearman.

Ed Strong has been curating lineups for Chuckle Busters since its inception. “Our season of Edinburgh Previews at The Wardrobe Theatre is always my favourite time of year,” he admits.

Sam Lake

“It’s the first time we get to see the shows that could go on to be the big hits of the Fringe, and perhaps be the catalyst that propels an act from the circuit into stardom.

“Also, as the Edinburgh Fringe itself becomes prohibitively expensive to attend, it’s a great (and cheap) way to tick off a bunch of the best shows without leaving Bristol!”

Sara Barron

Chuckle Busters presents: double bill Edinburgh previews from Celya Ab & Sam Lake at 7.30pm on July 8, Huge Davies & Dan Wye at 7.30pm on July 11, Olga Koch & Jenny Collier at 7.30pm on July 15, Ivo Graham & Mat Ewins at 4pm on July 21, Sara Barron & Lou Wall at 7.30pm on July 21, and Larry Dean & Brennan Reece at 7.30pm on July 22.

A double bill of ‘works-in-progress’ from Lou Sanders & Lucy Pearman is on July 28-20 at 7.30pm.
