Comedy / Luisa Omielan
Luisa Omielan is back, and this time, she’s ‘Bitter’
Making waves with her Edinburgh Fringe debut solo show, 2012’s What Would Beyonce Do?, it quickly became clear that Luisa Omielan was doing standup differently.
Bold, full of vitality, and with a powerful, energising message celebrating her femininity, her shows won her fans the world over, and regularly saw crowds more often on their feet than in their seats.
With four consecutive smash-hit one woman shows, over 12 sell-out runs at London’s Soho Theatre, and 50 million views across social media of her ‘thigh gap’ routine – she was also the first comic to be given a BAFTA Breakthrough award.
is needed now More than ever
But as she explores in her latest show, Bitter – coming to Bristol on March 29 – she has never made the breakthrough that she feels she deserves, for years being told by the industry she’s “too loud, too crass, and too emotional”.
“Working hard doesn’t cut it,” she says. “The whole game feels rigged.
“Whatever you do, don’t complain about it. Just smile, bitch. Write your gratitude journal and manifest. Everyone in power seems to be either a self-serving, egotistical maniac or have the moral backbone of a flaccid dead fish.
“Is it any wonder more women are choosing to stay single and not have children?! Not me! Not by choice, anyway. My single childless status is purely thanks to my beautiful cock blocking dog, she’s very protective!’”
Luisa Omielan: Bitter is at the Hen & Chicken Studio on March 29 at 8pm. Tickets are available at www.thecomedybox.co.uk.
