So, where does the whole Butt Kapinski concept come from?
Butt Kapinski is a whole lot of stuff. Film noir: the real stuff, the dirty, sleazy stuff, gloriously lit in semi-darkness. Slight gender dysphoria (misogynistic-societally-induced or organic, who can tell?). Trips to Burning Man Festival. Childhood speech impediments. Hunger to create with, and not at. Being a woman, being funny, and having that be weird. The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Private dicks.
I’ve been touring the show for several years and it is a consistent delight to bring it to new places and see how nicely it translates. I especially like working in England. Oddly, (as a Jewish American with precisely zero English roots) I feel most understood here.
What can the audience expect?
Do you really want to know? No, you don’t really want to know. Isn’t it always better when you don’t know that much? Isn’t it better when someone says, ‘hey, go do this thing’, and you are feeling free and ready for a thing you don’t know much about – and you do it, a testament to your own awesome sense of adventure. You are master of your domain. You buy a ticket for a thing. You see what unfolds.
You probably only want to know, will I be singled out and embarrassed, and won’t that suck? Right, naturally. But none of that will happen. We’ve all been to those shows, and we all hate those shows. I hate those shows most of all. I’ve come from a far away place – a dark and gun-slinging land – and I’m excited to be here and to make friends, not enemies. It is my business to make you comfortable and happy. People who hate “audience participation” love Butt Kapinski. It’s a different beast.
Let the rest of it be a surprise.
