IMPERMANENCE host guest performances and dance classes in their summer programme

By Sarski Anderson  Wednesday Jun 5, 2024

At their historic adopted home, The Mount Without, the award-winning IMPERMANENCE are a core part of the dance community within Bristol.

Like much of the arts sector, they are beset by the challenges of continued funding cuts, and are continuing to strive not only to keep making work, but to reach out to a wider audience.

“We passionately believe that dance, music, and theatre are essential for individuals and communities to both survive and thrive,” say co-directors Roseanna Anderson and Joshua Ben-Tovim.

For the first time, they have set up a Patreon in order for their supporters – acclaimed actor and playwright Sir Mark Rylance amongst them – to lend their support directly to the company.

“A small amount of money from a large number of people will have an exponential effect on what we are able to achieve,” they say.

“It will help us to create more art, reach more audiences, work with more communities, teach more young people and support and present the work of more artists.”

For their summer season, as well as running regular drop-in mixed ability dance classes, Anderson and Ben-Tovim are welcoming two returning performers back to The Mount Without.

Lucy McCormick: Triple Threat

A star blurring the boundaries of cabaret, dance and performance art, with a few power ballads thrown in, McCormick’s queer cult sensation Triple Threat has earned her countless rave reviews internationally. Ably helped by an angelic duo, Samir and Lennie, she attempts a re-enactment of the New Testament in order to connect with her own moral code.

“Lucy will no doubt be looked back on as one of the defining performance artists of our generation… seamlessly gliding between the most surreal outer edges of the fringe and the biggest stages in the UK (National Theatre, RSC, Bristol Old Vic, Royal Court),” say Anderson and Ben-Tovim. “If you’ve never seen her solo work this is not to be missed.”

Levy’s performance is a physical exploration of grief, and the liminal space between absence and presence. “Dancing this piece is an attempt to relate to the invisible, to look inside time, to reconstruct past joys, madness and anger,” he explains, “discarding linearity for moments of chaotic celebration.”

For Anderson and Ben-Tovim, Levy’s return has an extra special significance. “Alessandro coming to perform at The Mount Without is a special moment for us at IMPERMANENCE,” they reflect. “We founded the company with him in 2011 and he has been on the journey with us ever since. He recently won a big prize in Italy for his new solo which has been touring the festival circuit over there and we’re thrilled to present the UK premiere here in Bristol.”

Alessandro Marzotto Levy was a fellow graduate of Rambert along with Joshua Ben-Tovim and Roseanna Anderson, and the three went on to form IMPERMANENCE in 2011
