Aardman celebrate 25 years of Creature Comforts
No, really. A quarter of a century has passed since fresh, perky young TV station Channel 4 commissioned equally fresh, perky young Bristol animation studio Aardman to create a series of five short films. Produced under the Lip-Synch banner, these ground-breaking shorts were a development of the studio’s earlier plasticine model Animated Conversations series, which included a film set in the offices of Bristol 24/7 forerunner Venue magazine.
Of the five films, it was Nick Park‘s Creature Comforts that won most attention, going on to bag Nick his first of four Oscars and spawn a hit TV series. But the other diverse films – Ident, Going Equipped, Next and War Story – were all equally outstanding and paved the way for Aardman’s future international success. Now the four original directors of all five films are getting together for an Encounters Festival anniversary screening at the Watershed on December 10. Nick Park will be joined by Barry Purves; Aardman co-founder Peter Lord, director of The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!; and Richard ‘Golly’ Starzak, who’s currently ensconced in a London editing suite finishing off the Shaun the Sheep movie. The event will also feature contributions from Aardman co-founder David Sproxton and series producer Sara Mullock. For more information and to book, go here
