Aardman to take over Sparks for free workshops and animation screenings

By Edie Attridge  Wednesday Aug 16, 2023

A series of free Aardman animation workshops and screenings will take place at Sparks Bristol over the weekend as part of Bristol’s Summer Film Takeover.

Working with educational charity, Global Goals Centre, the production company behind family classics like Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run will hold nine free events across the city for the film takeover, presented by Bristol UNESCO City of Film.

From Friday August 18 to Sunday August 20, Sparks, a new community hub in the old M&S site in Broadmead, will be screening non-stop Aardman favourites between 11am and 4pm. Screenings will be free to attend, with no booking required.

The weekend of activities kicks off on Friday with a free ‘Amazing Scene Machine’ workshop held by animator Jim Parkyn.

Working as a freelance sculptor and model maker for Aardman for over 20 years, Jim has worked on the likes of Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and the Shaun the Sheep Movie.

Jim will be getting ‘hands on’ with visitors to create their own characters that will in turn be part of a winder animation scene celebrating life on land and under the sea , which will be displayed in Sparks Bristol.

A sold-out series of free clay modelling classes will also take place on Saturday August 19 and 20, where animators will share their knowledge with attendees to construct a flock of Shaun the Sheep, as well as plenty of Gromits.

Aardman@Sparks is part of Bristol’s Summer Film Takeover, which is being delivered as part of the City Centre and High Street Recovery and Renewal programme, funded by Bristol City Council and the West of England Combined Authority‘s Love our High Streets project.
