A lack of major new releases until Beetlejuice Beetlejuice allowed Despicable Me 4 to clamber back up to the top of the chart at the weekend even though National Cinema Day proved to be something of a flop, with admissions down by a third year-on-year. The feature animation is now likely to emerge as the highest-grossing film in the entire Despicable Me/Minions franchise. Aliens: Romulus was the big loser, falling back to fourth place in its third week on release, while Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends With Us held steady. Cinemagoers of more mature years flocked back to see ‘King of the Waltz’ Andre Rieu’s latest Maastricht Concert, Power of Love, which entered the chart at number five. The only other new release to make any impact at all was Chris Weitz’s Blumhouse horror movie Afraid, which crawled into tenth place. Hip-hop flick Kneecap, meanwhile, disappeared entirely, suggesting that all those who wanted to see it did so at the first available opportunity, though this one is apparently still doing well in Ireland.
