The UK box office enjoyed an exceptional last weekend of 2024, with overall takings up 50% on the equivalent period in 2023, as punters fled their families in the post-Christmas period to seek refuge in cinemas. The winner was Sonic the Hedgehog 3, with a whopping £11.7m haul, but each of the top five films took more than £1m. Several barriers were passed, with Wicked sailing across £50m, while Moana 2 and Gladiator II both hit £30m and Conclave achieved £5m. Robin Williams biopic Better Man also did very well to score a £1.5m opening over such a competitive weekend. Spider-Man ‘universe’ flick Kraven the Hunter remains the big loser, with takings slipping below £100,000 in its third week on release.
