One animated feature deposes another one at the top of the chart as Despicable Me 4 knocks Inside Out 2 into second place. Who’d have predicted 14 years ago that the underwhelming, only intermittently funny original Despicable Me animation would prove so popular that it launches a hugely successful franchise? But while that £8.8m opening weekend is certainly big, it’s nowhere near a record-breaker by Despicable Me standards. In fact, it’s the second lowest opening in the series, behind the first film. Even those two Minions spin-offs did better. By contrast, despite being knocked back into second place, Inside Out 2‘s vast haul should soon see it enter the all-time UK top 50. Of the new adult films on release, Nic Cage serial killer flick Longlegs did best in third place, ahead of space romcom Fly Me to the Moon.
