The critics might not have been universally charmed, but Disney scored another big hit at the weekend with animated sequel Moana 2, whose £12m opening was a massive increase on the first film’s £2.2m back in 2016. It also comfortably eclipsed fellow Disney release Inside Out 2 to become the third biggest opener of the year behind Deadpool & Wolverine and last week’s Wicked. The Oz musical, meanwhile, continues to haul in punters and has now overtaken Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to rank as the fifth biggest film of the year. Also doing well to grab a place in the top five is well-received Vatican thriller Conclave. Indeed each of the top five films took more than £1m at the weekend. So much for the alleged death of cinema, huh?
