The critical consensus is that it isn’t a patch on Paddington 2, but Paddington in Peru certainly succeeded in getting punters flocking back to cinemas after a few quiet weeks. The threequel enjoyed the biggest opening of the entire series and it seems likely to wind up as one of the most successful family film hits of the year, alongside Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me 4. Dwayne Johnson action-comedy Red One mopped up the adults who were resistant to the charms of the marmalade-loving bear, while Hugh Grant vehicle Heretic held steady in third place. But there was rather less interest in Lego rapper Pharrell Williams than we’d been led to expect, as Piece by Piece squeezed in at number 10.
