Bristol-based Happy Hour co-produces Jason Mewes’ directorial debut
Cult figure Jason Mewes – y’know Jay from Jay and Silent Bob – has just made his directorial debut. Madness in the Method is a full-on meta-comedy that’s been co-produced right here in Bristol by Happy Hour Productions from their base on Lower Park Row.
Mewes, who brought his stand-up show to the Anson Rooms back in May, is best known for his collaborations with actor/director Kevin Smith (aka Silent Bob), beginning with 1994’s low-budget indie comedy, Clerks, in which he generally plays an exaggerated version of himself. In Madness in the Method, Jay sets out to overcome typecasting and gain respect in Hollywood by reinventing himself as a serious method actor. Unfortunately, this only succeeds in driving him insane. Eventually, he becomes a serial killer.
Loads of his celeb chums are on board in cameo roles, including, inevitably, Kevin Smith. You’ll need to keep ’em peeled for Vinnie Jones, Danny Trejo, Gina Carano, Blake Harrison (of The Inbetweeners), Brian O’Halloran, Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain. The film also features the final screen appearance by former Marvel supremo and serial cameo performer Stan Lee, who died last November.

Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes play versions of themselves in ‘Madness in the Method’
“We are thrilled to be working with Jason Mewes and the LA based producers from Autumnwood to produce this witty, refreshing comedy,” says Happy Hour founder Tom George. “I can’t wait to see audiences’ reactions to what I’m sure will become a firm favourite.”
Alas, there are no current plans to screen the film in Bristol. But it will receive its European premiere in London at the at the annual FrightFest goreathon on Saturday, August 24. Go here for tickets and further information.
