Bristol Bike Project’s important work showcased in new short film

By Lowie Trevena  Wednesday Apr 10, 2019

The Bristol Bike Project has been featured as an episode in a video mini-series by conscious travelling company Millican.

The project, a city staple, came to fruition during James Lucas and Colin Fan’s cycling trip around Scandinavia in 2008. They envisioned a community bike project that disadvantaged people be independently mobile. Too often, poorer communities face economic travel barriers, as cars and public transport require funds that they simply don’t have. Upon their return to Bristol, the project was born.

James Lucas co-founded Bristol Bike Project in 2008

Bristol Bike Project started by asking for donations of unwanted bikes and they quickly outgrew their workshop, moving to Hamilton House in April 2009. Since then, it’s only continued to grow, benefitting countless marginalised and disadvantaged individuals by giving them the chance to get around the city free of financial barriers, as well as promoting environmentally friendly travel.

The organisation is well known within Bristol and James, co-founder of the project, was recently approached by Millican for a short film that showcased their important work.

Millican’s marketing manager, Stephanie Bradshaw, describes working with the dedicated co-founder: “We first met James on a photoshoot for Millican. His humble approach to life, paired with his love of the bicycle and all it encompasses, stuck with us.”

“Over the years James has brought to life what it means to truly ride a bike.”

Although Millican are predominantly an environmentally conscious outdoors company, they have recently created a series of short films which “explore creative mavericks and independent spirits who travel their own path through life”, showcasing a range of change-makers throughout the country.

Featured in Part Five, the film beautifully showcases Bristol Bike Project as a vehicle for positive change in the city and the how important James’ and Colin’s work has been to give disadvantaged communities in the city freedom and independence.
