Cinema ship sets sail for Bristol in July
The restored classic wooden tall ship Kaskelot reaches Bristol’s Hannover Quay this summer, laden down with cinematic bounty. During two packed days of activities on July 14-15, audiences will have the opportunity to explore the bowels of this three-masted barque and enjoy local archive footage of the historic harbour.
The first evening concludes in spectacular style with the Kaskelot’s sails alight with looped projected footage of Bristol’s harbourside past. On the second evening, the vessel becomes an expanded cinema with a full open air screening of Wes Anderson’s great nautical comedy The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. This will be projected onto the rigging and preceded by an aerial circus performance.

It’s all part of the Celluloid Sail tour curated by Bristol’s very own Compass Presents in partnership with the BFI’s Britain on Film project. The Kaskelot is due to visit five ports, beginning with Plymouth in May and concluding in London in the autumn. Admission to the daytime events is free, but as space is limited you’re strongly advised to turn up early. Doors open at 10am on both days. You’ll be allowed to visit the hold, engine room, captain’s room and the forecastle, and locate footage through specially constructed telescopes. Be warned, however, that access to these areas requires audiences to climb into the bowels of the boat, which are in places dark, hard to reach and not for the faint-hearted.
