Join Watershed’s new panel discussions
Although cinemas may remain closed, the Watershed has shared exciting plans to continue a shared viewing experience through their partnership with viewing platform MUBI and UWE Bristol.
Through a series of events called Conversations About Cinema – Thought in Action, viewers will be invited to watch the film online via MUBI and to join the virtual panel of experts.
The first panel discussion will be around Gillo Pontecorvo’s The Battle of Algiers. The live panel will be hosted on February 25 and will be joined by Francesco Tava, senior lecturer in Philosophy at UWE Bristol, historian Julieaota Chinchilla from the University of Buenos Aires, who specialises in anti-colonial struggles in Northern African history, and Lucia Salas, a film critic, curator and filmmaker.
is needed now More than ever
The series of panel events hope to spark a deeper conversation about issues and ideas arising in the films played and lead to a critical engagement of important cinema.
For the upcoming series, the films up for discussion will focus on the central theme of colonialism with films such as Ghare-Baire and Zombi Child included in the panel events.

Francesco Tava, a senior lecturer in Philosophy at UWE Bristol, explains the exciting partnership: “We wanted to find a way to continue a great experience of intellectual exchange and collaboration, providing a safe space where people can gather and discuss films together, rather than simply watching them in the solitude of their homes.”
On this next series of Conversations About Cinema, films up for discussion are:
- February 25: Discussing the Battle of Algiers by Gillo Pontecorvo
- March 11: Discussing Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) by Satyajit Ray
