UK premiere of Zapatista documentary La Montaña to take place in Bristol

By Robin Askew  Tuesday Oct 1, 2024

Inspired by the sentiment that in order to change the world, we must first change the way we look at it, Mexican filmmaker Diego Enrique Osorno set out to capture the story of a small group of indigenous members of the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN), who boarded a vessel from Mexico to Europe. Embarking on their historic journey in the midst of the pandemic, the trip marked 500 years since the conquest of Mexico, captured from the Aztecs by Spaniards and their allies.

In addition to recording the arduous journey, La Montaña delves into the history of the Zapatista movement, with archival footage of rural EZLN training camps and demonstrations.

Billed as “a compelling, powerful documentary about decolonisation and anti-neoliberalism,” La Montaña receives its UK premiere at the Cube Cinema on Sunday 20 October. It’s a fund-raiser for Kiptik – a Bristol-based solidarity group that has been working on a series of projects in the autonomous communities of Chiapas in South East Mexico since May 2000. The aim of Kiptik is to support the Zapatista struggle directly through the construction of drinking water systems, ecological stoves, health and mural projects.
