B10 presents: Anything But Becky – ‘Energy, percussion and bass!’

By Ursula Billington  Friday Nov 29, 2024

For the Bristol24/7 big tenth birthday bash, as well as throwing the party of the decade we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate the best of Bristol’s electronic music scene.

That’s why we’ve got the top man Roni Size heading up our night at the Spiegeltent on Saturday.

But it’s not all about the legends – it’s also about the up-and-coming, the new talent, the names to look out for. We collaborated with our friends at Booty Bass – also on Saturday’s bill – to run a competition for female and non-binary DJ’s to kick off our party.

The winner was the amazing Anything But Becky. As heard on Void Bristol, and spotted everywhere from Lost Horizon to the Love Inn,  Love Saves the Day to Glastonbury festival, DJ, producer and vocalist Rebekah Dinall is surely one to watch.

What inspired you to get behind the decks?

“I impulsively bought some decks out of the blue in the summer of 2023, which stayed in the box for almost half a year. But in January this year there was an opportunity to learn how to mix with Saffron Records.

“That was a big turning point in connecting with mixing, selecting and creating new sounds, but also just learning techniques from some pretty amazing DJs who have been in the industry for years.

“As a singer/producer, mixing had always interested me, and learning how to mix felt like expanding on my musical knowledge – I’m glad it has stuck because I absolutely love it!”

How would you describe your musical style? Who has influenced and inspired you?

“My initial connection to underground music was roots reggae and dub. Soundsystem culture is always what I’m drawn to, but I’m still at a stage of finding my musical style. It’s usually characterised by all the music I’ve been brought up on via my connection to Bristol and my Jamaican heritage.

“I’m always inspired by the women and non-binary artists in the game, but also in a way the lack thereof. Finding a space for myself was tough: the difficulty finding someone that looked like me as a DJ inspired me to do it more in a way.”

Rebekah champions the ‘love and vibrancy’ of Bristol and its music scene

What’s your musical connection with Bristol – any special memories?

“I honestly feel like a huge advocate for Bristol. I feel privileged to have been brought up in a city so culturally diverse and personally accepting of my own heritage and culture.

“One of my favourite nights out in the city, was one of the last – my first Bristol Dub Club at the Black Swan. I felt like I had missed the period where it was popping off but glad I got a lil glimpse of it.

“There’s lots of love and vibrancy in Bristol, so I’m glad I can and have experienced being a creative here. Every moment is pretty special.”

Any career highlights so far?

“It would have to be playing open decks for the Levis x Boiler Room event in London. I applied to it on a whim like most things, but felt so much gratitude for feeling like hours spent mixing in my room pays off a bit.

“More recently, opening for Sicaria at Bristol Beacon, which was the first time I’d ever played on a sound system. It was an incredible night and the more gigs I do, I feel closer to finding my musical sound.

“I have a very long way to go, but it honestly feels more foreign to me looking back to a time where I didn’t know anything about mixing.”

What can the crowd expect from your show at B10?

Tunes that will make people just wanna dance, which is usually my intention. I will be adding some edits but you “can expect a lot of energy, percussion and bass!”
