Bristol care homes residents enjoy world-class orchestral music at Bristol Cathedral

By Hope Talbot  Wednesday Jun 12, 2024

Residents from Bristol Care Homes enjoyed live orchestral music at Bristol Cathedral, marking one of the largest concerts for care home residents.

The concert, organised by Bristol Beacon and supported by Triodos Bank, welcomed over 200 residents to hear the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra perform an exclusive concert.

This unique event gave residents the chance to hear incredible orchestral music live, something that is otherwise inaccessible.

The concert continues a tradition of Bristol Beacon bringing live music to residents. In 2023, residents enjoyed an immersive concert with Aurora Orchestra, whose players moved throughout the audience as they played.

Bristol Beacon has also streamed concerts from the London Symphony Orchestra into care homes, allowing greater access for residents.

The concert was the final performance for Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s chief conductor, Kirill Karabits, who is stepping down after 15 years.

The orchestra played Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, which will be recognisable to classical music fans.

Todd Wills, Bristol Beacon‘s artistic director, explained: “We want everyone to be able to take part in the best live music experiences, and we are so pleased that our sustained and meaningful relationship with Bristol Care Homes is continuing, and that we are able to actively use the time that Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra have with us in the city to take part in such a vital and special concert.

“And this year, the support from Triodos Bank means that we can open up this offer to even more care home residents, who will be able to experience the power and emotion brought by a full orchestra in Bristol Cathedral.

“We continue to be grateful for support for our wider work with older people from The Anchor Society, The Grateful Society and St Monica Trust.”
