Bristol jazz community rallies for master musician Keith Tippett

By Tony Benjamin  Friday Jun 29, 2018

Born in Southmead, pianist and composer Keith Tippett has consistently been one of the great names of British jazz for nearly half a century since his amazing 50-strong superband Centipede burst onto the scene in 1970.

His reputation as a pioneer (and master) of improvised music is worldwide, while his influence has spread through the many talented jazz musicians that he has taught and performed with.

Sadly, however, a successful and highly-respected career in music is no protection from illness and 2018 has seen Keith laid low by a disastrous series of major health issues, including a heart attack and a bout of pneumonia.

Happily he is now on the mend but full recovery will be a long process during which, of course, he’ll be unable to perform and, as a self-employed musician, performing is his principal way of earning a living. To show their support for him at this difficult time musicians and promoters from the Bristol jazz scene are organising a benefit concert at the Hen and Chicken, with all proceeds going to Keith and his family.

The concert will feature a great line-up of players, many of whom have worked with Keith over the years, with Kevin Figes co-ordinating a 13-strong Keith Tippett Appreciation Ensemble while Paul Dunmall (who worked with Keith in the improvising quartet Mujician for over 23 years) has organised a special quartet for the occasion by extending his trio (above) to include trumpeter Jim Dvorak who first worked with Keith’s group in the early 70s.

The Ensemble is a roll call of top Bristol jazz names, including Kevin’s regular quartet (below) and they will be playing several of Keith’s compositions based on his original scores.

Promoters Ian Storrer (of Jazzata.com) and Jon Taylor (of Fringe Jazz) are confident that this will be a great opportunity for Keith’s home town to celebrate – and support – one of its most prestigious musical talents in the best possible way: through his music.

The Keith Tippett Benefit Concert will be at the Hen & Chicken on Sunday July 8. Advance tickets are available online via Fringe Jazz or Jazzata and financial donations can also be made here.
