Bristol Reggae Orchestra fundraiser to aid hurricane victims

By Ursula Billington  Friday Aug 2, 2024

Bristol Reggae Orchestra (BRO) has organised a fundraiser to support communities in the Caribbean impacted by Hurricane Beryl.

Many of the Orchestra’s members have close connections to the places affected.

“Once I received messages of how badly Carriacou was hit, and that over 90 per cent of one of the most beautiful and friendly islands in the world had been destroyed, we mourned for a week,” said organiser John Ridley of BRO.

“Then we decided we must do something to help, and that’s how the seeds of this benefit gig were born.”

The high-end category four hurricane hit the island of Carriacou in Grenada on July 1. The 150mph winds causing total devastation, with an estimated 90 per cent of buildings destroyed or damaged beyond repair.

The strongest hurricane in history to form in June in the Atlantic Ocean, it also destroyed several other places in the Caribbean.

The event is set to be a night to remember with performers alongside BRO including Celestine, the two-times Grammy-winning vocalist who performs with Dr Meaker and Ride On Time hitmakers Black Box.

Nia, a soulful lyricist with deep family roots in gospel who, as a poet and creative artist, founded Chi Chi Bud O Song and Story in 2021 and has recently completed the Windrush Travelling Songbook, will also perform live.

DJ Style will host the after-show gathering in the Crypt. Playing an instrumental role in establishing Bristol’s hip hop and r’n’b scene over the last 32 years, Style hosts the weekly Code of the Streets show on Ujima radio.
