Cellar Door: The thriving female-led collective showcasing art and music

By Issy Packer  Tuesday Feb 27, 2024

Launched last February as a university project aimed at engaging with the art industry, Cellar Door was founded by, Lola Norwood, Yasmin Egin, who work behind the bar of The Louisiana.

“Since we both worked behind the bar at The Louisiana, an iconic independent music venue, we proposed transforming its cellar into an intimate gallery space,” Yasmin tells Bristol24/7.

“Following an unexpectedly successful debut event, we decided to expand beyond the university setting, hosting multiple sold-out shows since.”

Cellar Door has since established itself as one of the highest-earning ventures at The Louisiana, second only to prominent festivals like Dot To Dot and Bristol Harbour Festival.

Establishing a thriving female-led collective, Cellar Door showcases both visual art and live music, prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity.

“We believe Cellar Door addresses a crucial need within the industry by providing opportunities for up-and-coming talent and challenging the male-dominated status quo,” Yasmin explains.

“Our mission is to create a welcoming environment for individuals of all ages and backgrounds, empowering young women to carve out their paths in the music and art worlds.”

The events aim to provide a platform for emerging Bristol-based artists and musicians, as well as offering an alternative space for those uncomfortable in traditional gallery or music settings.

The next event will take place on March 8 with a special multimedia extravaganza, in honour of International Women’s Day.

The event will include live music from Enabling Behaviour, Wednesday’s Child, Paper Crowns, Wyr and ЗАЛІЗО, with the art exhibition yet to be announced.

“This upcoming event holds special significance for us, as it not only celebrates female talent but also pays tribute to the incredible women who have inspired and supported us in a traditionally male-dominated industry,” Yasmin tells us.

The three floor multimedia extravaganza promises soundscapes, paintings, poetry, sculptures, installation, and a bill of women/non-binary led line-up.
