Cotham Club celebrates second birthday with special gig
Cotham Club launched in April 2022 as a post-lockdown project to create community through music while showcasing some of the incredible musical talent available to Bristol.
It puts on a monthly Great Global Sounds gig on a Friday night within the grade 2* listed Cotham Parish Church, a place with an interesting history.
Located on the site of the old city wall, it’s the place people were brought to be hanged and in the 1600s, five Protestant martyrs were burnt at the stake at the site.
is needed now More than ever
It is now being used as a space to bring the community together, with the gigs having welcomed an array of global musicians, from African jazz to Cuban salsa, curated by David Mowat and run by a team of volunteers.
On April 26, the monthly music event will celebrate their second birthday with double celebrations as Bunja Conteh returns to Cotham Club to launch his new album, Tamala.
Recently heard on the BBC, Bunja Conteh leads the AfroWelsh Connection which fuses the ancient Gambian kora with contemporary Welsh-influenced folk and is a skilled player of the 21-stringed African harp kora.
Alice Chapman, chair of Cotham Club said: “Bunja Conteh and the AfroWelsh Connection delighted the audience at our second gig in May 2022 and we are so looking forward to welcoming them back to celebrate their album launch and our second birthday!
“Cotham Club is pioneering a new type of gig: all age, all Bristol, always good value, always great global sounds. Our relaxed vibe makes it a great place to come on your own, or with friends and family.”
