dBs Institute announces major developments to their teaching facilities
dBs Institute has unveiled two new Dolby Atmos studios for students at their sites in Bristol and Manchester.
The Dolby Atmos studios feature acoustic design by Miloco Builds and include a range of PMC monitoring that allow students at dBs to practice immersive mixing.
Other developments at dBs facilities in Bristol and Manchester include ASUS gaming computers (an industry-leading brand for gaming PCs and laptops) for the institute’s Game Development and Game Art degree programmes and additional d&b T-series speaker systems for the Live Sound halls which provide students with the capability to work with a full line array that would be found on small festival stages.
is needed now More than ever
Matt Bernard, Head of Operations at dBs, explains: “We spent a lot of time researching Dolby Atmos setups and received a lot of support from Dolby and our acoustic designer, Miloco Builds.
“It became clear from the research that PMC is an industry standard for Atmos studios, and we wanted to make sure our students were working with the same kit that they will find in commercial environments. Also, the fact they sound incredible helps!”
The Dolby Atmos studios allow for immersive mixing in the Atmos format – a medium that is becoming more and more prevalent across the audio industry.

The Atmos rooms will open in Semester B after the Christmas break; launched with guest lectures and workshops from PMC. All of the other developments mentioned are now fully operational – these are upgrades to existing facilities.
Nige Burt, Director of HE at the dBs Institute, states: “We are always striving to be at the forefront of all technologies, as our facilities demonstrate.
As such, it is vital that we provide Atmos facilities for students to access, as it is becoming increasingly commonplace in the industry. This space will be for all dBs students, including those working in Game Development and Game Sound.
“We aim to remain at the forefront of emerging technologies in the creative and technical arena and to provide students with both the practical and personal skills that they will require to succeed in whatever industry they decide to go into.
“The ability to be innovative requires that the students have the freedom to be so but also access to innovative teaching concepts and the facilities to push the limits of what exists at present. That has been a major aim of the dBs Institute for the past 25 years and remains so.”
