By Issy Packer  Monday Apr 24, 2023

The winners of the Future Sound of Bristol initiative have been announced.

Organised by Audiotarky, a Bristol-based ethical streaming platform, in collaboration with Factory Studios, the initiative offered support to creative musicians and record labels in Bristol and its surrounding areas.

The competition closed on April 10 and received 110 unique applications for the scheme; 220 tracks and over 15 hours of diverse music from artists in and around Bristol.

The panel of judges include Elder Island’s David Havard; Trinity’s Aysha Tailor-Whyte; award-winning record producer, Ali Chant; Bristol International Music Ambassador, DJ Bunjy from Laid Blak; and the night time economy advisor for Bristol, Carly Heath.

They have selected five winners for a range of different prizes.

Taking the first prize of £5,000 and a one-month membership at Factory Studios is B of Briz, a masked rapper and producer in Bristol.

Creating eccentric alternative hip-hop that draws on feminism as a muse, she plans to use the grant for the creation of a brand new concept album with a working title of “Patriarchy, a gentle reminder; Volume 1: Toxic Masculinity”.

The second prize winner and recipient of £2,000 and 18 hours of studio time at Factory Studios is Lorcán. The singer blurs the lines of dream pop, ambient and indie rock to capture the transience of lived experience.

With the goal of reinvesting the grant into his craft, Lorcán plans to use the funding for purchashing new equipment, promotion and recording his debut LP.

The three third-place prizes of £1000 and nine hours of studio time are being awarded to the final three artists.

First up is Emily Magpie, a dream pop artist and producer from Bristol who has been championed by the likes of Tom Robinson on BBC Radio 6.

Heyouki, a nine-piece neo-soul and contemporary jazz band experimenting with simple yet deep-in-feel hip-hop rhythms, have also been selected.

Finally, Dwell is a five-piece band who embraces an almost trance-like musical style with an echo chamber of strings, jazz instrumentation, and guitars.

Audiotarky’s mission is to help foster a thriving community of musicians, who are celebrated for the work they produce, and are reimbursed fairly for that work; better enabling them to do what they do best, focus on the music.
