Gaz Brookfield interview

By Laura Williams  Monday Nov 10, 2014

He’s been a regular on the Bristol gig circuit since moving here from Swindon and his word of mouth success continues with Gaz Brookfield’s adopted-hometown gig selling out immediately. It’s a very special gig for more than one reason…it’s also his 1,000th ever gig. Needless to say, Gaz is looking forward to this one at The Fleece on December 19.

“It took everyone by surprise I think,” said Gaz. “We put the tickets on sale six months before the show to give it the best chance of selling out. But I did not expect it to sell out so fast. It’s a good feeling, and it takes the pressure off the night because I know there will be a crowd, and I can afford to pay my band!”

And there’s nowhere else he’d rather play such a milestone of a gig than Bristol. He said: “Bristol took me in. I feel adopted by it. I grew up in Swindon, so that will always be where I’m from, but Bristol is home. Such an awesome place to live!” He continues: “Seeing as Bristol is home, there is always a “homecoming” feeling to gigs here. I’m very lucky to have the fans that I have, and they are a wonderful bunch all over the country, and beyond. But Bristolians sing along the loudest, and I like that.”

Asked about what he loves about touring so much, Gaz highlights the joy of travel and seeing new interesting places, of having fun and meeting new people. “I like touristy sightseeing,” he said. “I saw a waterfall that turns teddy bears to stone in Knaresborough a few weeks ago.” And despite the sometimes downside of getting a little lonely and not being able to eat healthily, as long as he has his laptop, phone and red wine, it’s all good.

And he said that, ultimately, he loves playing live, discovering new bands and swapping CDs and gigs. He’s got a good network of musician pals, including 3 Daft Monkeys, who’ve taught him a thing or two. “Lukas, the bass player from 3DM has taught me that I am a sub-standard surfer, and that 3am is no time to be buying take out wine from a pizza place in Exeter,” he said.

“My favourite Bristol band at the moment are St Pierre Snake Invasion.  Can’t wait to get their album when it comes out! Lonely Tourist is awesome! Chris Webb is awesome!  She Makes War is awesome! There is so much good music in this city.  We’re very lucky to live here you know?!” Yep, we do.
