Interview: Hannah Trigwell

By Jonathon Kardasz  Wednesday Aug 29, 2018

Hannah Trigwell started out her music career busking in Leeds and thanks to the power of the interweb, has now forged an international career bringing her songs to the world at large (with number one hit in the far east) as well as performing alongside well established artists such as Stereophonics, Faithless, Sigma, Jess Glynne and Gabrielle Aplin. She is on the verge of releasing her first full blown LP, Red, and has a date at the Louisiana promoting that record. B24/7’s vinyl enquirer gave her chance to chat about some of her influences and likes.

What was the first record you ever bought and where did you buy it?
It was an EP by M People, I bought it in Leeds HMV and I thought it was the best thing ever, I used to play it on repeat.
What was the most recent record you bought and where did you buy it?
I think the last album I bought was Red Hot Chili Peppers By The Way! Such a great record. I listened to it so much when it first came out, I feel like those songs were a huge part of my teenage years.
What record do you stick on the deck to sooth your soul?
Jack Johnson: In Between Dreams.
Have you bought a record on the basis of a great single and then been disappointed by the rest of the album? If so, tell us all about it…
I don’t think so no. I bought Natasha Bedingfield’s Unwritten album specifically for the title track single, but it surprised me – it’s jam packed full of great songs.

What record do you turn up to maximum to get in to that party mood?
Lose My Breath by Destiny’s Child.
If we had the ability to land you at the recording of one classic LP so you could witness the whole recording process, what would you choose and why?
Maroon 5 – Songs About Jane. I think this album has a lot of intricacies that you don’t hear until the 5th time around… you can tell that a lot of thought has gone into this album with the guitar riffs etc., so I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that.
Ever bought a record solely because you liked the sleeve? If so, what was it and did it delight you or disappoint you?
Nope! But never say never!

Oh no, your house is burning down and you can only rescue one record! What would it be and why?
Mine ha ha ha. I’d want to keep one of the original copies! This record means a lot to me so for sentimental reasons, it has to be Red.
What’s your favourite record sleeve? Tell us all about it (and whether or not the music gives you as much pleasure as the sleeve).
I really like the record sleeve of Tase Sultana’s new album but I haven’t listened to that yet as it’s not been released! Looking forward to hearing that one.
Morbidity alert: what record would you like played at your funeral?
Something soothing from Norah Jones ha ha.

Hannah Trigwell plays the Louisiana on Friday 7th September 2018.
