Interview: Sarah Darling
Sarah Darling has released three LPs over the past few years and has not only had a shitload of downloads, but gathered critical acclaim and built a growing fan-base smitten by her “Dream Country” (crystallised on her newest LP of the same name). If you fancy finding out what the hot fuss is all about, Sarah will be playing St Georges Hall with Sam Palladio on July 23rd as part of River Town Festival. Meanwhile, here’s what the Vinyl Enquirer found out about her musical tastes…
What was the first record you ever bought and where did you buy it?
My first ever record was given to me by my dad! It was Don Henley’s End of the Innocence! My first purchase by myself was Prince, Diamonds and Pearls.
What was the most recent record you bought and where did you buy it?
Kacey Musgraves Golden Hour is my most recent purchase, I bought it online and it’s stunning.
What record do you stick on the deck to sooth your soul?
There’s something about The Raising Sand record with Robert Plant and Alison Krauss that heals my soul. My fast second is anything by James Taylor.
Have you bought a record on the basis of a great single and then been disappointed by the rest of the album? If so, tell us all about it…
I loved Gotye, Somebody That I Use to Know! Then I heard nothing more and it made me sad. Yes I love great songs, but an album has to tell a story.
What record do you turn up to maximum to get in to that party mood?
Anything Bruno Mars all the way, then maybe a little Justin Timberlake.
is needed now More than ever
If we had the ability to land you at the recording of one classic LP so you could witness the whole recording process, what would you choose and why?
James Taylor’s Sweet Baby James because literally it’s some of the most pure songwriting I’ve ever come across. It’s magic to me.
Ever bought a record solely because you liked the sleeve? If so, what was it and did it delight you or disappoint you?
Lana Del Rey, Born to Die was that for me. It exceeded all expectations so I’m now her biggest fan!!
Oh no, your house is burning down and you can only rescue one record! What would it be and why?
My Johnny Cash collection is precious to me, I’d definitely grab that! My grandfather introduced me to country through him when I was little.
What’s your favourite record sleeve? Tell us all about it (and whether or not the music gives you as much pleasure as the sleeve).
My recent fave is David Bowie’s Black Star because it was a design so true to who he was. I like when an artist creates a whole world.
Morbidity alert: what record would you like played at your funeral?
Oh yikes ha! Shower the People, James Taylor or What a Wonderful World by Louie Armstrong.
