Music / Gigs

Lacuna Coil interview

By Laura Williams  Wednesday Oct 1, 2014

Lacuna Coil straddle that area between goth and metal, so it’s somewhat apt that they’re heading to Bristol this halloween for a gig at Anson Rooms in Clifton.

The Italian rock group is one of many with a career spanning three decades – they’ve had plenty of ups and downs but are in a good place at the moment and looking forward to playing Bristol on their favourite night of the year.

Singer Andrea Ferro said: “We’ve been around since 17 years now and we’ve experienced a lot – growing up as musicians as well as human beings, becoming more mature and balanced.”

Employing powerful vocals which compliment his female counterpart, Cristina Scabbia perfectly, Ferro is flying making the most of the male/female combo in rock. He said: “I’m not aware of a similar set up at a relevant level, especially in rock/metal. Having two singers can be confusing at times but definitely gives you a wider range of possibilities in the music and you can have quite a big spectrum of ranges and tones to play with.”

Having just released their latest album, Broken Crown Halo, the group is currently looking forward to touring with their newer material. “It’s an album really based in today’s reality, both musically and lyrically, with a fresh sound and pretty good tunes,” said Ferro, adding: “We keep collecting ideas for new material and it probably won’t be too long before we will sit down and start writing something new too.”

Living up to their name, The Italian Gothfathers, the group’s image and music is dark and brooding with plenty of attitude. Ferro said: “We are one of the few Italian rock bands to ever have an impact on the international music scene.” And how does their home crowd compare to their UK fans? Ferro said: “To be honest I don’t see much of a difference, maybe Italians are a bit more loud at times, but overall they both know what it takes to enjoy a great show!”

So why should you join them at this gig? Simple: “It’s gonna be on Halloween night which is one of our favourite nights of the year,” said Ferro. “It’s gonna be dark and funny at the same time, we cant wait!”
