Malian folk star brings new show to the Beacon
The son of Ali Farka Touré, one of Africa’s most influential and internationally-renowned musicians, is bringing his new outfit to Bristol Beacon at the end of May.
Vieux Farka Touré will be playing his own compositions and some of his father’s well-loved classics, backed by a hand-picked traditional acoustic trio of musicians for the first UK tour of this new project.
“I’m very excited to be back in Bristol!” he told Bristol24/7.
is needed now More than ever
Vieux Farka Touré is known for his masterful guitarwork and songs which oscillate artfully between Malian Folk, with the unique instrumentation and style of Songhai’s deep musical tradition, and the Desert Blues which first made the Farka Touré name legend.
He has produced six solo albums, including the critically acclaimed Mon Pays.
His recent collaboration will Khraungbin on Ali has been well-received by wide-ranging audiences. Its sister release, the more traditional Les Racines, has been called ‘exquisite’ by reviewers.
Vieux told us more about what to expect from his upcoming show at the Beacon:
“I have added virtuoso ngoni player, Ousmane Dagno, to my band for this tour,” he said.
“I’m excited for audiences to hear what Ousmane brings to the music. I’ll also be joined by Adama Kone on the drum set and calabash drum, and Marshall Henry on the bass, who were both with me the last time I played in Bristol.
“I’ll be playing a mix of my songs and probably a couple of my father’s songs too. I like to start with some acoustic songs and then build up the energy to hopefully have everyone dancing by the end of the night!”
The show is brought to the Beacon on May 23 by local folk afficionados Ear Trumpet Music and Earth Cruises.
