Mural painted to remember Bristol rapper Sirplus

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Dec 30, 2020

A new mural in St Werburgh’s pays tribute to one of Bristol’s most acclaimed musicians.

Martin Walker, aka Sirplus, died in November, 18 months after suffering a hypoxic brain injury.

“We are all left heartbroken with the loss, however may we find some comfort that Martin is now at peace,” says a fundraising page in his memory.

Known as one of Bristol’s best rappers, Sirplus was the brother of Bristol mayor Marvin Rees.

Talking to Bristol In Stereo in 2019, Tom Koast from Durkle Disco said that Sirplus was his “personal favourite Bristol artist of any genre”.

Born and bred in Bristol, Sirplus told Ujima in 2013 that he was “probably the realest one out here… there’s not many man that’s talking like realness, and got a flow with it too”.

The mural by Jody in the Mina Road tunnel in St Werburgh’s has become an unofficial shrine to Sirplus, with flowers left on the pavement next to it.

Rees called the tribute to his brother “amazing”.

Writing on Facebook, Kari Marks Gray said: “This is incredible. A fitting tribute indeed.”

Sharon Beauhill said: “Just been to take a look and it is truly amazing. What talent and an amazing tribute.”
