Official St Paul’s Carnival anthem released
An official charity single in support of St Paul’s Carnival, which returns for its 50th anniversary on July 7, has been created by a talented group of teenage musicians.
The six young people – vocalists Romany, Kalila, Xyzelle and MCs Stripzz, Jibzy and Tony Bandz – worked with Aspiration Creation Elevation and Bristol Plays Music during sessions at Docklands Youth Centre in St Paul’s, and were mentored by professional local musicians Javeon and Tanya Lacey to produce the track.
is needed now More than ever
The song’s lyrics reflect some of the rich history of Carnival, referencing the 50th anniversary, eating curry goat in the sunshine and meeting friends on Brighton Street, just off the procession route on City Road. The chorus refers to Carnival spreading love and unity in an historic and diverse part of Bristol, which echo the aims of the very first event in 1968.
Julz Davis, managing director of St Paul’s Carnival CIC, said of the song’s official release: “With it being our 50th anniversary, we’re delighted to have teamed up with all the partners to jointly deliver such an exciting project that amplifies the Carnival’s history whilst supporting the next generation of artists. By downloading the song, not only will you be supporting great home-grown talent, you’ll also be investing in the future of the Carnival.”
The song can be downloaded for 50p, with funds raised going to St Paul’s Carnival CIC. The young musicians will also be performing the song at Carnival in the Unity Youth Zone and on the main stage.
