Play Dirty Nice: tunes ‘n’ toons duo release viral video hit
The creators of a collection of cheeky ‘tunes ‘n’ toons’ with catchy hooks released their latest video on Tuesday.
Dirty Nice released If I was Abducted by Aliens after making a deal with their management that if the teaser they posted on June 17 received 50,000 likes they would be allowed to put out the full track.
To their amazement, the likes hit the target and didn’t stop until they’d reached 93,000, racking up over a million views. Suddenly the band had a viral hit on their hands.
is needed now More than ever
The animation for the “novelty alien song” illustrates a flight-of-fancy trip into space. But it’s not just the band’s playfulness that fans are responding to.
The tracks behind the visuals are lo-fi indie-fuzz with catchy hooks and a hint of melancholy that leaves listeners with a bittersweet yearning for more.
The band has an integral funny bone, as the musical project of Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared composer Charlie Pelling, who previously worked with 2022 Edinburgh Comedy Award winner Sam Campbell and BAFTA-winner Jamie Demetriou of Stath Lets Flats and Fleabag.
Pelling joined forces with Lisbon-based musician Mark Thomas to form Dirty Nice. The pair have won themselves a cult online following with their eccentric animated characters that fans of The Trap Door and Rick and Morty are sure to fall for, backed by a breezy alt-pop soundtrack.

The two-piece began their musical career with a gig at a kid’s birthday party, and have since gone on to form a full six-piece live outfit and perform at Maida Vale for BBC Introducing.
The response to their latest release has been overwhelmingly positive, with fans commenting: “I’ve literally counted down the days until this comes out on Spotify,” “I missed my graduation for this, so worth it,” “I don’t know how you did it but this song is silly, comforting, and charming all at the same time,” and “I will never get tired of this.”
The song is released on Bristol’s Chiverin Records.
