Preview: Clairo, SWX
There’s something about Clairo that resonates. There have been hundreds of thousands of YouTube bedroom pop singers with candied vocals and twee ukeleles, but the Boston teen has transcended that particular sphere and broke superstardom. Your parents may never have heard of her, but she’s already got a viral smash under her belt (Pretty Girl turned the Internet’s attention to her and, in three years, has amassed over 43 million views) as well as a million Instagram followers.
Though she’s graduated slightly from this lo-fi sound, her brand of indie-pop does still sound tinkered by DIY laptops and make-shift beats. A perfect accompaniment to lyrics that deal with young love, explorative meditations on the adolescent self and deep-set loneliness that steeps through the fuzzy backing tracks. Get down with the kids by getting down to Clairo.
