Music / Psychedelia

Preview: Khruangbin

By Josiah Wong  Friday Feb 2, 2018

Khruangbin’s music has always been about establishing space, taking its listeners out into another place or time. Whether creating music over Skype or the Texan barn that housed first album The Universe Smiles Upon You – the band is forever aiming to take you into a new environment.

The largely instrumental trio blend psychedelic, soul and uniquely 60’s Thai funk creating a groove heavy amalgam aimed at sharing the same space as Tarantino soundtracks. When the band do choose to sing it happens as a collective, enhancing their wavy and dream-like nature.

Having already played the Trinity Centre, The Lantern and The Downs festival amongst other dates it seems as though they have a soft spot for Bristol, with Guitarist Mark Spence admitting that “all the artists I liked ended up being from Bristol.”

With their new album Con Todo El Mundo, arriving at the end of January we’ve had two small glimpses of the new material we’ll hear on the night. Maria Tambien is a politically charged celebration of the lost female artists of Iran. The video showcases female singers dancers and artists in pre-revolution footage before they disappear with the powerful hand of a censor.

The band have described second snippet Friday Morning as their first love song, announcing on Facebook that “when it came time to make the music video, we wanted to show what love feels like to us.” Given the quality of their second album this show at the Bierkeller is guaranteed to be a mesmerising spectacle.

Khruangbin play the Bierkeller on Tuesday February 6, tickets are now sold out.
