Punk outfit Cat Flap launch ‘frenetic’ debut EP

By Ursula Billington  Tuesday May 14, 2024

Bristol punk four-piece Cat Flap launch their debut EP at Zed Alley at the end of the month.

The record showcases their melodramatic rock and roll sound, with heavy, spitting vocals and furious guitar licks.

Their lyrics, they say, are ‘full of rage and intent’, with opener Cruella repeating the mantra “Migrant not criminal / asylum not racism / friend not an enemy”, Ignored a paeon to breaking windows and jumping fences in Clifton that is a class-informed howl for respect, and Julius Geezer mocking toxic masculinity with its ‘macho-busting’ verses.

Despite the music’s full-on anarcho-punk attitude, the band say Cat Flap was borne from a desire to create something joyful with friends.

Croft, Bails, Dom and Burf grew up together and, with this project, aim to “transmit a cacophony of loud, thrilling noises and an indignant moody resolve.”

They cite Idles, Amyl and the Sniffers and Nirvana as influences, but have created their own brand of fast and heavy tunes with thunderous drums, rolling bass lines and huge guitar.

The show at Zed Alley, on Host Street in the centre, takes place on May 23 with support from anthemic surf punkers Hot Cat and ‘quirky drunk flower punk’ from Els Errorets.
