Review: José Gonzalez, O2 Academy
José Gonzalez – for some reason is an artist I never thought I would get the chance to see live, so when I saw that he was coming to Bristol I jumped at the chance to review. The addition of an orchestra was inspired – as soon as his vocals kicked in with the opening number the texture of the music blossomed, bringing a whole new depth to the music which became hypnotic.
The opening number was a perfect showcase of how a full orchestra enhances the dynamics of a song seemingly effortlessly. Following on, Crosses was met with a large cheer from the audience – from myself included. As we all stood there watching Gonzalez perform it to perfection it brought back memories of sitting in St Andrews park at 16 years old with not a care in the world – feeling like the world was full of endless possibilities.
The beauty of having an orchestra to build up the picture of Jose’s musical blueprint is that you can see how each section adds to the overall sound when it is brought in and taken out. It also helps to give definition to the small touches that may be missed when just being listened to blended in with other sounds on a record. The orchestra gives sustenance to each and every sound and because of that every part of it should be seen by the audience.
is needed now More than ever
The Forest was a particular stand out moment for me in terms of how powerful it was to see and hear a particular section of the orchestra get the limelight alongside and Gonzalez. Staying true to the lullaby-like pattern of Gonzalez’ songs matched with perfectly plucked fingerpicking, it’s a sound that makes you feel warm and safe all at the same time. Accompanied by the whimsical like woodwind section, it really did feel like being led down the secret path of a forest, discovered by chance on a day of exploration. When the harmonics joined in softly from each of the section you really felt the sound grow – you didn’t just hear it.
The way the acoustics mapped out really was very impressive and did make a huge difference in the ability too be able to see the music build up and develop in front of you. It can be easy when you listen to something at home to forget how complex the music is but it is truly undeniable when you see it being weaved together in front of you. It truly was the most perfect performance I could have hoped to see and a great way to finish off a week. If they return make sure you book a ticket, you won’t regret it.
