Review: YARD Open Air Club, Motion

By Caragh Jones  Wednesday Sep 6, 2017

Motion has undergone a transformation over the years and this ambitious venture – to make Motion’s courtyard the first open air club in Bristol – was another big step for the superclub that’s been voted one of the best clubs in the world.

The party promised to be killer with a line up featuring some of the most sought-after dance artists of today, including Detroit techno originator Jeff Mills.

Catering for those who love to dance outdoors, YARD offered groovers three redesigned outdoor spaces to choose from: Crane Yard, Lock Yard and Court Yard, which boasted an impressive Kling & Freitag rig.

Peter O’Grady, better known as Joy Orbison, set the mood with breakbeat tunes in the Court Yard. He hit the crowds quite literally Right On with timeless Silicone Soul.

Legend Seth Troxler and the city’s finest Eats Everything brought the bromance to the booth ahead of Seth’s euphoric set. With a DJ career that started in Detroit at the age of 16, Seth’s understanding of rave, and dance music entwined with his likeable stage presence made for a performance to remember.

When the great outdoors got too much we took a trip inside where Mr Price, known for his intimate events at Studio 89, took us on a mystical journey with his art installation. Looking up, we saw a fabulous hazy blend of dangling lights, and looking down, we saw crowds of people led on the floor soaking up the magic.

Octo Octa’s live performance filled a sunny Lock Yard with melodic house music. For someone who only started DJing publicly within the last three years, this was one of the best live performances of the night.

As the sunset over the Yard, partygoers welcomed one of the biggest names in techno to the stage. The setting was perfect for headliner Jeff Mills to walk us into the night.

The cross-pollination of music, spaces and art made this one of the best parties I’ve ever experienced at Motion. I’m so excited to see more from YARD Open Air in summer 2018.
