The Disco Panther slinks into town

By Ursula Billington  Monday Oct 7, 2024

A new monthly night hosted in a longstanding venue at the gateway to Stokes Croft is designed to be groove-heavy from start to finish.

Glass Half Funk will bring the UK’s finest live funk, soul, ska and boogie acts to the Attic Bar, the venue that originated as a traveller’s hotel in the 17th century.

Episode One features Swansea’s ten-piece beasts of brass Disco Panther. The band are stalwarts of the scene and renowned for their out-there live shows that have to be seen to be believed.

“Expect wildly bombastic brass performances, vocal hype that just won’t quit, irresistible grooves to get you dancing – and in the unlikely event you can bring yourself to take a breather, cocktails in our famous covered courtyard,” says promoter Frances Forbes-Edwards.

Francis, singer with tantric funk band Crinkle Cuts, knows a thing or two about the scene and says this band are too hot to miss. “I first saw a Panther gig at one of my all-time favourite ’boutique’ festivals, Bimble Bandada, near Brighton,” he recalls.

“As a member of a touring band myself, I’d seen a lot of performances that summer, but these guys have a special energy I’d seen very rarely.

“The audience became one great eight-hundred-legged funk monster moving to the infectious beat from the stage. Since then, they’ve gone from strength to strength.”

Support comes from new act in town Space Flight Boutique, an outfit once described as ‘if Queen and Tower of Power had a baby’, that say they bring “a healthy dose of classy chaos, sexy sparkles and super-sonic compositions,” to get crowds moving.

Topping off the night will be a DJ-live saxophone combo: “I was just waiting for a reason to invite Tailored Sound back to play for us again after a brilliant gig last year,” says Francis.

“He’s a great DJ and skilled saxophonist with a deep understanding and love of sound system culture that combines in the perfect way to keep us going till the lights come on.”

The night runs from 9pm to 2am on October 11, and is the first in a monthly series at the Full Moon and Attic Bar. All details can be found at fmbristol.co.uk/events
