Venue of the Month: Mr Wolf’s
Mr Wolfs started life as a veggie food wagon selling noodles at Glastonbury Festival before finding a permanent home on St Stephens Street in April 2002.
Mr Wolff sold take away noodles and smoothies from a hatch, but quickly becoming popular with the late night crowd and local music scene.
He then started using his alcohol license and started selling beer and although he wasn’t originally convinced by this, it came as a surprise when he sold the whole barrel in just a few days.
is needed now More than ever
The story of how the venue went from a bar to a live music venue goes like this: having always been passionate about live music he was then approached by a heart broken musician who just wanted to play some music, to which he agreed.
And so, the Mr Wolfs live music venue was born.
Continuing to grow, he knocked through the walls into the two neighbouring units before eventually moving to its current location on St Nicholas Street in 2015.
“It’s the organic nature in which this family run business was created that we believe puts it at the heart of the Bristol independent music scene.” The team at Mr Wolfs tells Bristol24/7.
The venue now opens every night of the week with live music and DJ’s and are proud to be a key stepping stone for new artists and music in the Bristol area.
Mr Wolfs has seen a number of musicians walk through their doors and perform on their stage but do the team have a favourite gig?
“We had a really nice seated show with Fickle Friends as we came out of lockdown. But really we like anything that brings great energy to the venue and gets people dancing.
“The 21 piece French brass band Poil O’Brass, who were visiting Bristol last year, has definitely been a recent highlight. Half of them didn’t fit on the stage and the whole venue just had the best atmosphere.”
Covid-19 was a tough time for all business and, like many venues, Mr Wolfs had to adapt to the changing times by creating a safe space for gig-goers.
“We have been working hard to improve our outdoor spaces with the expansion of our courtyard smoking area and even the addition of a rooftop terrace.” They tell us.
“This has been a massive help to us over the summer months and allowed us to open earlier – despite the rubbish weather.”
The venue was involved with the ‘Save our Seats’ campaign after Bristol City Council attempted to withdraw outdoor seating licences issued throughout the pandemic.
Fortunately, the council U-turned on this decision after over 5000 people signed a petition to prevent it from happening.
Of the city, the team says: “Bristol is such a lively bustling city yet only a short distance from amazing countryside. The whole place is beautiful with colourful houses and fantastic views all in a relatively small area.
“Whether its art, music or food, there really is something for everyone in Bristol. There is such a wide range of events, venues, bars and restaurants across the city. It really is a wonderful city, full of wonderful people.”
