Venue of the Month: The Fleece
The Fleece is a historic independent venue in Bristol and one of the most well-known spots for a gig in the city.
Situated on the ground floor of a Grade II listed building called the Wool Hall, the building is 192 years old and was originally a sheep trading market – hence the name the Fleece!
Skipping several years, it has now been a music venue for the past 40 years, first opening its doors in 1982.

It has welcomed a host of huge and famous names at the beginning of their careers including Radiohead, Oasis, Muse to Kae Tempest, Jeff Buckley, PJ Harvey, Coldplay and Amy Winehouse.

The Fleece has overcome some particularly tough times, from the threat of closure due to flats being built opposite the venue, huge business rate increases, noise complaints and then surviving the global pandemic.
It’s been a difficult few years.
However, the venue said that they wouldn’t have survived without the support of the people: “All this has been overcome by the support of the local community,” they tell us.
The Fleece underwent a redesign in 2021 and now has a larger stage, new facilities and viewing screens for the audience.
