Waldo’s Gift latest band to take part in Morning Room Concert Series

By Bristol24/7  Monday Feb 8, 2021

Waldo’s Gift‘s delicate reinterpretation of The Hut, the thumping title track from their acclaimed 2020 EP, was recorded on stage behind closed doors at The Gallimaufry in the summer of 2020.

It follows on from the success of The Hut EP – the band’s debut studio release and first after signing to Bristol based Black Acre Records.

This stripped back session is part of the Morning Room Concert Series from The Galli – the Gloucester Road venue widely praised for championing and supporting Bristol’s new jazz scene.

“This version of the tune came together so quickly, as did the original,” said Jim from Waldo’s Gift.

“All the ideas you hear on The Hut were born on that stage as part of our residency. So our approach to crafting the song first time round, was very much in that spirit of spontaneous creation, sewing together different ideas from bootleg improvised recordings at The Galli.

“We also felt the chords could speak more delicately, and by combining Alun’s subtle vocal with a Roland Juno that happened to be lying around, we stumbled across this arrangement in true Waldo’s fashion.

“After six months away from the venue that has given us so much, it was heart-warming to bring The Hut full circle and perform it on the stage that birthed its original ideas. A stage that had been home to us for over three years.”

Galli owner James Koch added: “We’ve been blessed to work with some of the city’s wildest talent over a number of years, running a weekly residency with Waldo’s Gift right up until the pandemic forced us to stop.

“The Morning Room Concert series is a way for us to maintain that creative connection. Offering the familiar site of the band on that stage, but this time intimate, almost vulnerable, in daylight.”
