Woodbox Productions: The production company putting grassroots artists first

By Issy Packer  Thursday Jun 15, 2023

Woodbox Productions is an audio/visual production team of musicians, photographers, sound engineers and videographers, consisting of four friends; Adam Cook, Dan Canvin, Dom Mosley and Mikey Brumby.

The team spent the summer of 2020 self-renovating and refurbishing their studio space from a disused MOT garage.

They hope to help majorly affected grassroots artists bounce back from the total loss of live music in the city after the pandemic.

Keep our city's journalism independent.

Since then, they have produced and released over 50 live sessions completely for free, in support of upcoming bands and artists in the area.

“We created Woodbox to document and celebrate the vast wealth and diversity of independent artistry in our local scene,” the team tell Bristol24/.

“Having had the privilege of witnessing and working with countless incredible bands and artists at all levels, we made it our goal to create an all-encompassing production house to help give something back to our scene and community that we love.”

The studio offers free intimate live sessions for grassroots artists for artists to be discovered.

“With costs often preventing artists from creating professional-grade live videos, we wanted to create the chance for new artists to showcase their music and be granted potential onward opportunities with no worry about financial cost,” they explain.

The production company open applications for their free live sessions on a semi-regular basis, where 20 slots are available to offer each time.

Bands and artists are encouraged to get an application in, which they will be able to find through their social media channels once the form has gone live.

Why is a space like this needed in Bristol? The team say that while the wealth and diversity of music can be seen throughout the city, there isn’t an online platform dedicated to showcasing Bristol music in a similar way to NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts.

“Bristol’s music scene is historically celebrated, but with a huge pool of grassroots artists and upcoming bands there is always so much more to be discovered.

“By creating our live session platform we strive to showcase Bristol’s scene both locally and further afield, in turn granting artists a free opportunity to be discovered and push their development.”
